A suspended cylinder is fixed by sealed high-pressure oil inside its blind end chamber. The load keeps steady only when the oil circuit stays pressure-tight. Hidden internal leakage lets pressurized oil flow back to the tank gradually, and load gravity pushes the piston back, resulting in automatic sinking. In short, cylinder drifting arises from pressure loss and invisible oil backflow.
1.Internal leakage or spool sticking of counterbalance valve (top failure reason)As the key locking component for lifting cylinders, counterbalance valve gets stuck by dirt and metal particles inside hydraulic oil. Fatigued springs and aged seals prevent full closure of valve spool, leading to slow oil overflow and steady cylinder sinking.
2.Neutral internal leakage of multi-way directional valveLong-term abrasion widens the fitting clearance between spool and valve body. The valve fails to seal oil ports at neutral. Higher oil temperature reduces oil viscosity and worsens leakage, so the cylinder sinks faster under hot working condition.
3.Piston seal failure & cross leakage inside cylinderWorn piston seals enable oil to transfer between rod chamber and blind chamber. Under heavy load, cross leakage accelerates cylinder sinking together with abnormal cylinder overheating.
4.Stuck check valve with poor sealingDebris trapped in check valve stops full closure, causing slow pressure release and gradual cylinder drifting.
5.Excessive oil temperature and abnormal back pressureHigh heat thins hydraulic oil and weakens sealing performance of all components; blocked return pipeline raises back pressure and prevents complete closure of counterbalance valve.
Disconnect and block the pressure hose connected to cylinder blind end:
1. No more sinking after blocking: trouble locates on counterbalance valve or multi-way valve;
2. Still keeps sinking: internal piston seal damage inside the cylinder.
For faulty counterbalance valve: disassemble & clean spool and damping holes, replace worn seals and failed springs;
For leaking multi-way valve: grind spool or replace valve assembly;
For cylinder cross leakage: disassemble cylinder, renew all piston seals and repair scratched cylinder tube;
For overheating issue: inspect cooling system and replace contaminated hydraulic oil and filters.
Always inspect counterbalance valve first for automatic cylinder sinking faults, then check multi-valve leakage and cylinder sealing in sequence, which helps cut unnecessary spare parts cost effectively.
