Hydraulic system maintenance

The Biggest Misconception About Hydraulic Systems: Will Higher Pressure Speed Up Movements?

Many operators and beginners working with hydraulic systems share a common wrong idea. They believe that simply turning up the hydraulic pressure will make equipment movements faster. This is one of the most widespread misunderstandings about hydraulic transmission, and improper pressure adjustment will not only fail to improve speed, but also cause extra wear, oil leakage and even serious equipment failures.

To figure out this problem clearly, we first need to learn what decides the running speed of a hydraulic system. In standard hydraulic circuits, the moving speed of cylinders, hydraulic motors and other actuators is mainly determined by oil flow rate, not system pressure. Flow refers to the volume of hydraulic fluid passing through pipelines per unit time. The more oil flows into an actuator within a second, the faster it moves.

System pressure is created by load resistance instead of adjustment. Pressure exists to overcome external loads such as workpiece weight, friction and cutting force. When the load stays unchanged, the normal working pressure of a hydraulic system will keep stable automatically. If you only increase the pressure setting while the flow rate remains the same, there will be no obvious change in movement speed at all.

What will actually happen if you blindly raise hydraulic pressure? First, excessive pressure will put a heavy burden on all sealing parts. Seals inside cylinders, valves and pipe joints will bear greater extrusion force, which accelerates aging and deformation and leads to frequent external and internal oil leakage. Second, higher pressure increases impact and vibration during startup, stop and direction change. It damages mechanical structures and shortens the service life of the whole hydraulic system.

In addition, most hydraulic systems are fitted with relief valves for overload protection. Once the actual pressure exceeds the preset safety value, the relief valve will open and release oil automatically. The extra pressure you set will turn into useless energy loss, raising oil temperature rapidly. Overheated hydraulic oil will lose proper viscosity, worsen lubrication performance and trigger a series of hidden troubles.

If you really need to speed up hydraulic movements, the correct way is to adjust the flow. You can adopt flow control valves, increase pump displacement or optimize pipeline layout to raise the overall flow rate. Meanwhile, keep the working pressure matched with actual load. Reasonable pressure setting ensures the hydraulic system runs safely, stably and efficiently.

In conclusion, never confuse pressure with flow in hydraulic systems. Higher pressure does not equal faster movements. Correct operation and parameter setting based on hydraulic working principles are the key to long-term reliable operation of your hydraulic equipment.
