Hydraulic system maintenance

Hydraulic Balance Valve: Working Principle, Function & Common Failures

A hydraulic balance valve, also known as counterbalance valve, is an essential safety component for hydraulic lifting systems, widely used in aerial work platforms, truck cranes, construction machinery and hydraulic cylinders.

Many hydraulic failures such as cylinder drifting, load automatic falling and jitter during lowering are caused by the lack of balance valves or incorrect component selection. Ordinary check valves can only lock the oil circuit but cannot control the lowering speed, while a hydraulic balance valve integrates one-way flow, pressure holding, speed limiting and anti-fall functions.

The balance valve mainly consists of valve body, check spool, return spring, pilot piston, throttle spool and sealing parts. It has three working statuses: lifting, static holding and lowering.

1. During the lifting process, the hydraulic oil pushes the check spool open directly. The oil flows smoothly without extra pressure loss, ensuring efficient cylinder lifting.

2. When the equipment stops working, the pilot pressure disappears. The throttle spool closes tightly by spring force and back pressure from the load. The valve realizes self-locking state to prevent the cylinder from drifting. It also provides an anti-fall function once the hydraulic hose breaks accidentally.

3. While lowering loads, pilot pressure pushes the internal piston to open the throttle port gradually. The descending speed is controlled by the throttle opening instead of gravity. It effectively eliminates load speeding, jitter and sudden impact.

There are two mainstream types: single balance valve and dual balance valve

The single type fits single-acting cylinders.

dual type is suitable for double-acting cylinders and hydraulic motors for heavy-duty machinery.

Most balance valve failures are caused by contaminated hydraulic oil, wrong installation direction, aging seals and incorrect pressure adjustment. Maintaining clean hydraulic oil and regular inspection can greatly reduce hydraulic system faults and improve operational safety.
